Our Mission StatementFamily Mediation & Juvenile Services is dedicated to providing quality resources to youth and families in order to reduce delinquency and out-of-home placements, and to empower them as individuals, family members, and citizens of the community.
HistoryFamily Mediation & Juvenile Services of Southern Rockingham County (“Family Mediation”) is the oldest running mediation program in the state. Established in 1983 as Plaistow-Kingston Mediation, the agency expanded rapidly to include support from Atkinson, Danville, Hampstead and Newton. In 1988 our community service and restitution programs were added and in 1997 monies from a Title V grant helped to fund the addition of our diversion programs (Challenge, TLC, SSTOP, and Tobacco Education Courses).
The parent component of the Challenge and TLC courses was added in 2001 with start-up funds granted by the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation; it has since become an integral part of our program and is a major reason for a variety of our success stories. We were able to continue offering this course during 2004 and 2005 thanks, in part, to grants received from Heritage United Way and Putnam Investments. However, looking forward, we hope to establish a wider fund base so that as our client numbers grow, we can guarantee class availability and maintain high-quality services.
One way we have maintained our efficiency while keeping our expenses low has been by our judicious use of our volunteers. We retain just two full-time employees (our Executive Director and our Program Administrator), and one part-time administrative employee; class facilitators are hired as needed; our mediators and community site supervisors are dedicated volunteers who donate their time. Maintaining our volunteer base of approximately 25 volunteer mediators is a continuing challenge. We offer a 36-hour mediator training course approximately every two to three years in order to expand our volunteer pool. To help them stay refreshed and current, our mediators are required to attend annual trainings and seminars.
Family Mediation & Juvenile Services actively collaborates with other youth prevention initiatives that include: Sanborn/Timberlane Safe & Drug Free Schools Coalition and the New Hampshire Juvenile Court Diversion Network.

The Board of Directors holds monthly meetings to govern the affairs of the agency. They are strictly volunteers who donate their time to manage, fundraise, advise, or do whatever is needed – all to the benefit of the local communities. Also, our Board traditionally sponsors our Volunteer Appreciation evening to honor our volunteers: mediators, community service site supervisors, major supporters and other local VIPS. The festive appreciation night has become increasingly successful, with a nice meal, raffles, and socializing.
