What is Parent-Child Mediation?

Parent-Child Mediation is a way to resolve serious differences between family members. Mediation helps alleviate the possibility of escalating stress and further disruption within families by addressing the underlying issues contributing to conflict between parents and their children.

The focus of mediation is to explore the potential for change in the behaviors and attitudes that have led to conflict. The goal is for the parties to create a jointly developed written agreement that each person feels is fairly balanced, realistic and an accurate reflection of the issues raised and addressed in mediation.

Trained volunteer mediators meet with the families on a regular basis. They help each family member to voice their individual concerns, clarify ways the situation could change, and establish a sense of equality among all family members while discussing issues and helping families to find new ways of managing conflict.

Possible Issues for Parent-Child Mediation:
  • Running away from home
  • Responsibilities
  • Parental authority
  • Friends, social activities
  • School attendance
  • Money: allowance, employment
  • Curfew
  • Independence and privacy
  • Communication
  • Trust
  • Respect

What is Diversion?

Diversion is an alternative to traditional court processes. Family Mediation & Juvenile Services administers a diversion program for youthful offenders ages 12 through 18 from the towns of Atkinson, Danville, Hampstead, Kingston, Newton, and Plaistow. Referrals are made from many resources including: schools, counselors, human service agencies, parents, police, and courts or can be “self” referred. The program is based on the premise that some behavior is more effectively dealt with through alternative measures, rather than through the court. The ultimate goal of diversion is to intervene early to curtail further involvement and reduce recidivism.

Diversion programs take many forms. Those currently in place at Family Mediation & Juvenile Services are:
Parent-Child Mediation
Substance Abuse Awareness
Anger Management Course
Community Service
Peer Mediation
Stop Shoplifting Course
Tobacco Education Course
Restitution
